A wolf and two brown bears eating salmon together

 In June 1989, a lone gray wolf in Katmai National Park was seen traveling with two brown bears, crossing the Brooks River beside them, and sitting within three feet eating the salmon scraps they left behind. The bears ate the brains and skin. The wolf took everything else. Nobody chased anyone. Nobody growled. The three animals moved through the landscape together as if they had agreed on an arrangement that all of them understood.

A National Park Service employee first spotted the trio near Brooks Camp: one gray wolf walking with two brown bears through the forest. Not following at a distance. Walking with them. The next day, five park visitors reported what was generally believed to be the same three animals roughly five miles away. The visitors watched all three work their way down a riverbank, find a shallow crossing, and wade the Brooks River together. On the far side, the bears fished. The wolf waited.
When the bears caught salmon, they ate selectively. Coastal brown bears during the peak of the run often consume only the fattiest parts of the fish: the brain, the skin, and the roe. The rest of the carcass, the muscle, the organs, the frame, is abandoned. A fresh salmon carcass missing only the brain and skin is still a meal. The wolf took the remainder as fast as the bears discarded it, feeding within a meter of animals that weigh ten times what it weighed.
Tom Smith, Steven Partridge, and John Schoen published the observation in the Canadian Field-Naturalist alongside other documented interactions between wolves and brown bears at Katmai. The researchers specifically noted how unusual the bears' tolerance was. Brown bears kill wolves. It is well-documented across Alaska, Yellowstone, and every other landscape where the two species overlap. A wolf sitting three feet from a feeding bear should be a dead wolf. These bears let it eat.
The same paper recorded a second observation from 1992. A wolf and brown bears were seen fishing near each other on the same river, again with the kind of mutual tolerance that bears do not normally extend to wolves under any circumstances. The researchers noted the behavior as remarkable because the default relationship between the two species across their shared range is hostility, displacement, or predation.
The explanation that fits best is the salmon. During the peak of the sockeye run, Katmai's Brooks River holds more calories per square meter than almost any other ecosystem in North America. The bears are catching more fish than they can eat. They are discarding the parts they do not want. A wolf that stays quiet, stays close, and does not challenge the bear for the fish it is eating poses no competitive threat because there is nothing to compete over. The bear has more salmon than it needs. The wolf wants the parts the bear throws away. The math works for both of them as long as neither one changes the terms.
Outside the salmon run, the arrangement would almost certainly collapse. A wolf approaching a brown bear at a moose carcass in winter, where every calorie matters and the next meal is uncertain, would be charged or killed. The tolerance at Brooks River existed because the river produced so much food that sharing cost the bears nothing and gained the wolf everything.
